Community Impact & Volunteering

Community Impact & Volunteering

Making a difference through community, leadership and service.

My involvement in community initiatives has given me opportunities to support children and young people, contribute to events, work alongside volunteers and develop a stronger understanding of community service.

From leadership at school to volunteering with organisations such as HeartKids and Blue Light Victoria, community involvement has become an important part of both my personal development and the direction I want my future career to take.

01 — MY COMMUNITY JOURNEY

Community has always been part of my journey.

My involvement has developed from school leadership into volunteering, youth engagement, fundraising and community support.

My interest in community involvement began during secondary school, where I had opportunities to take on leadership responsibilities and contribute to school events and initiatives.

In 2021, I became a Community Captain, beginning a period of leadership that helped me understand the importance of representing others, supporting students and contributing to a positive community environment.

Throughout my school years, I became involved in events including swimming carnivals, athletics days and fundraising activities. These experiences helped me develop confidence in organising activities, working with others and taking responsibility.

Since leaving secondary school, I have continued this focus through volunteering. My experiences with HeartKids and Blue Light Victoria have allowed me to contribute outside of an educational environment and work directly with children, young people, volunteers and community organisations.

Community involvement is now closely connected to my broader interest in psychology, social work, child wellbeing and supporting people through challenging circumstances.

The lessons I have taken from leadership, volunteering and working with different communities.

Listening

Understanding that effective community work starts with listening to the people and communities being supported.

Responsibility

Taking responsibility seriously, particularly when working with children, young people and volunteers.

Communication

Adapting how I communicate depending on the people, environment and circumstances.

Empathy

Developing a greater appreciation of different experiences and perspectives.

Teamwork

Understanding how different people contribute towards a shared community goal.

Leadership

Learning that leadership is about supporting others, not simply holding a position.

Adaptability

Becoming comfortable working in different environments and responding to changing circumstances.

Service

Understanding the value of giving time and effort towards something that benefits other people.

07 — FUTURE DIRECTION

Continuing to make an impact.

Community involvement is something I want to continue throughout my education, professional career and personal life.

My current studies in psychology and business are helping me understand people and organisations, while my volunteering provides opportunities to apply those interests in real-world environments.

Looking further ahead, I want my career to involve supporting children, young people and families. This connects strongly with my goal of completing further study in social work and pursuing a career in child protection.

I want community involvement to remain more than something on a resume. I want it to be a genuine part of the way I contribute to other people and the communities around me.
