Podcast Episode: From School Leadership to Building My Future: My Journey So Far

Pip: Jonathan Boyen has been busy — school captain, retail worker, university student, volunteer, and now, apparently, a person with a website to prove it.

Mara: That's the territory. His recent post traces a journey from school leadership through early employment, higher education, and community involvement — and maps where that journey is heading next. Let's start with the arc itself.

From School Leadership to Building My Future

Pip: The post opens a question worth sitting with: what does it actually look like when someone builds a professional identity from scratch, starting at fifteen?

Mara: The post frames it this way: "What started with getting involved in my school community has developed into a journey across leadership, employment, education, volunteering, professional development and community involvement."

Pip: That's a lot of territory for someone still in their early twenties. And the school leadership chapter is where it begins — Community Captain, then House Captain, then School Captain in 2024, representing more than a thousand students.

Mara: The post is clear that the lesson wasn't about the title. Leadership, it says, is about being willing to take responsibility, listen, communicate, and contribute to something bigger than yourself. That framing carries forward through everything that follows.

Pip: Including the World's Greatest Shave in 2024, which raised $466 for the Leukaemia Foundation — a personal challenge turned outward.

Mara: And the employment timeline is just as deliberate. KFC from December 2021, at fifteen, through to January 2025 — over three years in a fast-paced customer service environment, progressing to Skills Champion and Shift Supervisor Trainee responsibilities.

Pip: Then ALDI from January 2025, where the post notes scan rates of 800 to 900 items per hour, with a personal maximum of 1,194.

Mara: Right — and the post is explicit that the number matters because of what it represents: efficiency, accuracy, consistency, and work ethic. Not a statistic for its own sake.

Pip: Alongside that, a mystery shopping role with CGL Retail Services from July 2025 — assessing customer experience and compliance from the other side of the counter.

Mara: The education thread runs parallel. A Diploma of Business at Victoria University in 2025, followed by a Bachelor of Psychological Studies combined with a Bachelor of Business, starting January 2026. The post names child protection as a long-term career aspiration.

Pip: The credentials list is substantial — RSA, CPR, Working With Children Check, NDIS screening, a Heavy Rigid Truck Licence, and a student membership with the Australian Marketing Institute.

Mara: And a current Cancer Council fundraiser, "A Little Colour, A Bigger Impact," scheduled for October 2026, with a goal of $1,000 and $250 raised at the time of writing. The post frames it as consistent with everything else: using a personal milestone to contribute to others.

Pip: The psychology and business combination points somewhere specific — understanding people inside organisations.

Mara: The through-line is consistent: every role, qualification, and fundraiser connects back to the same question of how to make work meaningful.

Pip: And that question doesn't close — it just gets more interesting as the degree progresses. More ahead.
